LAD #26

Summarize MLK's Speech:
He begins by stating that even though slavery was ended 100 years ago, blacks were not really free. They were still oppressed by segregation, discrimination, poverty and injustice. He then declares that the promise of life liberty and pursuit of happiness was not really granted to all men. He believed that there was room for change. He wanted a change now If there was no change, there would be a revolution, not full of hate, but a peaceful and disciplined revolt. The movement cannot end until there is no question of equality. He urges to listeners to go back knowing that the situation will change. MLK claims he has a dream that America can uphold. he hopes that everyone will be equal someday, especially in the South. He hopes that the blacks and whites will join together like brothers and sisters. He dreams that people will not be judged by their skin color and finally everyone will be free.

Read and Summarize The Populist Party Platform
The Populist Party is an agrarian based party. It is focused on addressing the problems dealing with the big businesses. They are in a time period called the Gilded Age. This time period is known for it's issues of corruption within the gov't and the big businesses. In addition, there was a big gap between the rich and the poor. The party did not like the idea that the gov't took silver away from American currency. This platform has three main points. These include: creation of a permanent labor union, fairer pay for the workers, and gov't ownership of the railroad system-so it could belong to people. The platform wanted sliver to come back and establish a income tax. These people want the government to completely control the railroad, telephone system, and telegraph.

Read and Summarize President McKinley's War Message
On April 1898, McKinley believed that war between Cuba and Spain should be stopped. This is due to four reasons. These include: stopping the cruelty, American owes protection to Cuba, the American economy is being hurt, and it threatens American peace and neutrality. He argues that the tragic event with the ship Maine proved that this was a dangerous conflict for America to enter in. He begged that congress will allow him to end the war by force. Lastly, he said the ultimate decision is in the hands of congress. He also mentioned that Spain has told America that they plan to end these hostilities. However, if this did not occur then the problem would still be present.
